Few towns in Greece have such a close relationship with water as Edessa. Streams run through the centre, little bridges link the neighbourhoods, and at the edge of town the water plunges down to the plain from a height of 70 metres. About 45 minutes from Driades, it is one of the loveliest day trips in the region.
The Karanos waterfall
The town’s trademark is Karanos, the great waterfall named after the legendary first king of the Macedonians. The water falls from a height of about 70 metres through lush greenery, and the sight is impressive in every season — thundering in spring, verdant in summer, colourful in autumn. Next to it is the smaller Double Waterfall. Landscaped paths and steps take you down close to the water, and on the lower levels there is a small cave with stalactites. In the evening the waterfall is lit up and takes on an entirely different, almost magical look.
The Open-Air Water Museum
At the foot of the waterfalls lies the Open-Air Water Museum, in the town’s old industrial complex. Restored watermills and old workshops show how the power of water once drove Edessa’s economy. It is a pleasant stop, especially if you are travelling with children.
Varosi, the old town
Above the waterfalls spreads Varosi, the old quarter of Edessa, with cobbled lanes, traditional mansions and churches. It is worth getting a little lost in its alleys and stopping for a coffee overlooking the plain of Giannitsa.
Ancient Edessa
If Vergina and Mieza have whetted your appetite, don’t miss the site of Longos, about 3 kilometres outside town, where the ruins of ancient Edessa survive — walls, parts of the main street and public buildings in a quiet, green setting.
Make a full day of it
Edessa pairs perfectly with the Pozar Thermal Baths, which lie in the same direction: morning at the waterfalls, lunch in Varosi, afternoon in the warm spring waters — and back at the hotel for the evening. If you have time, stop at Lake Agras, just outside town.
