Naoussa is the home of Xinomavro, the most characteristic red wine of northern Greece. Here wine is not just a product; it is part of everyday life, and throughout the year the town finds plenty of reasons to celebrate it.
A few words about Xinomavro
The PDO Naoussa zone is one of the most historic wine regions in Greece. Xinomavro (literally “sour-black”) takes its name from its lively acidity and deep colour. It makes wines of character and structure that age beautifully — which is why it is often compared with the great reds of Europe.
January: “Naoussa, City of Wine”
A three-day event dedicated to Xinomavro, usually in mid-January. It opens with a wine walk through the town centre, with producers hosted in restaurants and bars, continues with a wine fair where you can taste dozens of labels, and closes with a day of open wineries along the Naoussa Wine Route.
May: “Open Doors”
On a spring weekend, the wineries of the Wine Roads of Northern Greece open their doors to the public, with guided tours, tastings and side events. Several Naoussa wineries take part every year, and admission is usually free. With the vineyards turning green, it is perhaps the most beautiful time for such an outing.
September: Street Food Festival – Wine Edition
In early September, Naoussa’s Municipal Park fills with flavours, music and, of course, Xinomavro. A relaxed three-day event with free admission, ideal for groups of friends, which coincides with the start of the harvest season.
And the rest of the year
Many wineries in the area welcome visitors all year round, usually by appointment. If you plan to do tastings, arrange a designated driver or ask us about a taxi — we will gladly recommend wineries worth getting to know.
Would you like to experience it for yourself? Book your stay at Driades, just a few minutes from the centre of Naoussa.
