Agios Nikolaos Park

Ancient plane trees and the springs of the Arapitsa, a few minutes from here.

A few kilometres outside Naoussa, just a short drive from Driades Hotel, lies Agios Nikolaos Park — the favourite spot of the people of Naoussa and perhaps the town’s most famous sight. It is a lush green area of centuries-old plane trees, one of the few such forests to have survived in Greece.

Through the park flows the Arapitsa, Naoussa’s river, which rises from its springs right here. Landscaped paths and little wooden bridges cross the water, among streams, small waterfalls and an artificial lake, while the little chapel of Agios Nikolaos, which gave the place its name, stands at the heart of the park.

The shade of the plane trees and the running water keep the temperature noticeably lower than on the plain, even in August. That is why on summer afternoons the park fills with families, walkers and groups of friends enjoying a coffee or a meal at the little tavernas by the water.

Every season gives the park a different character. In spring the Arapitsa runs high and the greenery is fresh; in autumn the plane trees turn gold and red and the paths are carpeted with leaves — perhaps the most photogenic season. In winter, with a little snow, the scenery becomes almost fairy-tale, and a walk pairs perfectly with a hot mountain tea at the nearby cafés.

The park has organised recreation and sports areas, picnic spots and easy access by car. It is an ideal destination for a relaxed morning walk before setting off to see the sights of the area, or for an afternoon break after a day at Vergina or on the slopes.

If you want to combine the park with the town, you can follow the Arapitsa downstream: the paved walkways along the riverbanks lead you to the centre of Naoussa and its waterfalls, close to the historic site of Stoumbanoi. Ask us at reception for the best route depending on how much time you have.
